Where do we sail?
That will depend on you, the sailing student or explorer. Both sailing lessons and excursions will take place on the Sassafras and Chester Rivers on the upper eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay (yellow circle). The Sassafras is a shorter river, with high banks, located near the top of the Chesapeake Bay in the Tidal Fresh Zone. There is a lot of boat traffic on the Sassafras on summer weekends, although the shallow tidal creeks are delightfully isolated. The Chester River is much longer, slightly more salty, and relatively free of motor boat traffic because there are not many marinas.
The time of year, wind and tide conditions, boat traffic, and the desires of the first person to sign up for an outing will help determine where to "put in" at a public boat ramp. As a general rule, there is more wind toward the mouths of these rivers in the summer. Bird and wildlife watching is excellent "above the bridges" on both rivers, as well as in the shallow tributaries.
On a full-day excursion, it will be possible to experience a fast sail in open water, wildlife watching in tidal creeks, as well as fishing and exploring along the river banks.
