Sailing Excursions
One of the best ways to explore the Bay's extremely shallow tributaries is in a Hobie Mirage Adventure Island sailing kayak. These new one-person boats, designed and produced by the world-famous Hobie Company, can be paddled, pedaled, or sailed. They can go where no other boats can, because they draw only a few inches of water. With removable pontoons (called Amas) on each side of the sit-on-top kayak, these boats are extremely stable. They are very easy to sail after a few minutes of instruction. In case of strong winds (or no wind), the sail can be easily furled around the mast with a tug on a line. The boats pedal like bicycles at 3 knots per hour or they can be paddled like traditional kayaks (for individuals who want a traditional kayaking experience). Steering is accomplished by manipulating a lever with the left hand, so explorers will have their hands free to fish and to watch, photograph, and sketch the extraordinary wildlife of the Sassafras and Chester Rivers and their tidal creeks. There is space on board to store binoculars, cameras, extra clothing, and food. For the duration of the excursion, explorers will be provided with a life vest, a dry sack, waterproof binoculars, laminated sheets describing local wildlife, a healthy snack bar, and a bottle of water.
